Moxie Women – Diane Stoller

November Moxie Mogul:

moxie cycling, women's cycling, ironman, cycling, cycling jersey

Diane Stoller

Full-time breast cancer surgeon, mother of 3 children, and a 53-year-old Iron Man triathlon finisher

Moxie Cycling was first introduced to Diane when a mutual friend photographed Diane crossing the Iron Man finish line in her France Ave Moxie jersey and knew that we would be honored to hear she chose our jersey. We of course are honored and were excited to hear more of her story on the path to the 2012 Madison, WI Ironman in our Moxie Mogul interview:

Moxie Cycling – How did you first find yourself becoming involved in triathlons?

Diane Stoller I started running at 42 when my then 48-year-old husband had a heart attack. I thought to myself, we need to be healthier.  I weighed 60 pounds more when I started with no weight loss goals, just sweat 4 hours a week and eat 5 fruits and vegetables per day.  I let myself eat only ONE bad thing (a cookie, M&M’s, etc) per day.  I began following what the cardiologists told my husband to do.  Truth be told, he never did any of it but after 4 years I was down 50 pounds and running my first marathon.

Moxie on the Jesse James Bike Tour 2012

Summer is starting to wind down, unfortunately, but Moxie Cycling’s calendar is still full! We had a blast last weekend riding in the Jesse James Bike Tour 2012 in southern Minnesota. The tour is run by the Northfield Rotary Club to celebrate the defeat of Jesse James Days in 1876. They invite you to “come for the ride, and stay for the raid,” where the failed bank robbery that led to the demise of the James-Young gang is re-enacted. This year the rides range from 10 to 100 miles, and you know that the Moxie team met the challenge and rode the Century route!

“Traverse some of the most beautiful country in southern Minnesota, including the Sogn Valley—a hidden gem, the Faribault lakes area, and rolling rural hills. Great tests! Exhilarating rides!”

It was a 25 mph head wind day with rolling hills- not an easy task- but we had a great time riding with some of our Moxie ladies and men. As part of the ride we got spurs for our cycling shoes and squirt guns complete with holsters to keep us cool.

Saddle up!

What a fun, but exhausting day! We are planning to make this an annual event, hopefully we can get more of you Moxie women signed up with us in 2013.

Roundup: Ragbrai 2012!

What we love this week // RAGBRAI 2012!

It’s probably obvious now that we are big fans of the annual bike ride across Iowa, but in case you aren’t familiar with the event, we are happy to give you the rundown of how much fun this cycling gathering is! RAGABRAI actually stands for Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa. The ride first began in 1973, making this year’s ride the 40th annual RAGABRAI. In the first year, there were 114 riders who completed the ride, and since then, the numbers have continued to grow until they had to limit the ride to a total of 8,500 week-long riders and 1,500 day long riders. This means on an average RAGBRAI day in Iowa you can see some 10,000 cyclist’s going down the road!

Just another day in Iowa on RAGBRAI

And when you get that many cycling aficionados together, you get a very diverse but wonderfully united crowd. Some of the team names we came across were brilliant…as well as the men dressed like Elvis, the older couples dressed in all pink including feather boas, the multiple groups of proud beer drinkers, and of course the lovely ladies dressed in Moxie!

Tamara, Abby & Brooke in two of our styles coming out in 2013

The first day we were able to get the Moxie Men out on the official Moxie Tandem bike! Thanks to a recent ‘pimp my tandem’ makeover, this relic is looking super shiny and in the signature Moxie green. After the 50 mile ride, Alex and Denton confirmed that it takes some major man moxie to pedal that single-speed.

One fellow RAGBRAI rider had to ask, “You know that’s a single-speed right?” But the men of Moxie were able to persevere!

Denton and Jordan even completed the Century ride and earned their patch.

What us Moxie ladies are celebrating about is the expo before the first day of riding where Moxie Cycling had a booth debuting our 2013 line with a pre-sale! We are so proud and excited to reveal our new patterns and styles, and have had some great feedback so far. It was great fun to see women the remainder of the ride wearing our jerseys! Check out these Moxie spottings:

What we love this week // Our booth partner at tomorrow’s Nature Valley Expo in Uptown has some major Moxie!

Team Moxie is getting anxious for the event tomorrow night in Minneapolis’ Uptown, the Nature Valley Criterium. In an .88 kilometer course that races around 6 tight corners, you can see some intense racing that goes from low speeds to high speeds in seconds. Elite riders from across the country, as well as some Olympic hopefuls, will whiz by only a few feet away from the audience so your job is to clap, cheer and be a rowdy and supportive crowd!

We will be present, just not at the front of the crowd – we will be sharing a booth with our expo partner Chicked, another amazing Minneapolis-based athletic company with major Moxie.

moxie cycling shares a booth with chicked

CHICKED: -verb.
The act of getting passed by a
stronger woman athlete.

CHICK: -noun.
The woman who just passed you.

We love that Chicked is all about supporting women in the sports industry, professional or casually, and they aren’t afraid to call out when women excel in an event. Moxie agrees that often the competitive nature that is so prominent in a sport can sometimes cause new athletes to shy away, but with Chicked, it’s embraced and encouraged in a positive way. Women who excel are given recognition, giving inspiration to fellow athletes to excel as well. And I almost forgot, they have some great clothing!

Here is the original Chicked t-shirt; created especially for when you pass that group of guys on the trail on you bike or with your trail-runners on. And because we both are all for more girl-power, we teamed up and created a custom Moxie design together which you can find at www.chicked.com!

How cool is this? Moxie & Chicked created this custom jersey just for you

If you’d like to see more, tomorrow night would be the perfect time to stop by and say hello to both of us! Directions to the event:

The race is at the intersection of Hennepin Ave. & Lake St.

  • From I 94:
  • Take the Hennepin Ave South
  • Turn left (East) on W 28th St.
  • Turn right (South) on Fremont Ave S
  • Turn right (West) on Lagoon Ave
  • Park in the ramp at the intersection of Lagoon and Girard, on your right, between Lagoon Theater and Uptown Tavern

Behind the Scenes

Now that the whole Moxie Team is back in the Twin Cities, we would like to share some fun pictures that we took while in Cache Valley in Northern Utah at the Little Red Riding Hood event last weekend. The turn out was great as well as the weather. We were very impressed with how welcoming and well-organized the biking community involved was; it was all about enjoying the ride at any skill level and we love that about this event. And were thrilled to know that one of the 25 original women cyclists was in attendance 25 years after the first Red Riding Hood! Yes, this event goes way back and has always been in support of women’s cycling. Pretty impressive.

Our booth just barely squeezed into the SUV we drove to the event. Little did we know it was damaged in transit and would be of no use. 😦

Our set-up sans booth! Still work out well since Mother Nature was kind to us!

Brooke got caught a little off guard by the strong sunshine, but the Cherry Icee’s from Sonic helped cool things down!

All in all it turned out to be a successful weekend with our only regret being that we hadn’t been able to participate. Next year we will have to be prepared because this event is rumored to have sold out their 3,600 spots in only a few short hours. Farewell Utah! We will be back!
