Food & fitness for your consideration // Harness the sun’s energy during these long days & brew up ‘Sun Tea’

In almost exactly one month from today is Summer Solstice – the longest day of the year. On June 20th we will have the longest day of sunshine and then slowly lose daylight on our way back to the cooler months. Let’s make the most of the next two months and put some of that sunshine to work! If you have access to direct sunlight during the day, make some ‘Sun Tea’ to put over ice after a long, hot bike ride.

That’s right; instead of coming home dripping sweat because you just did a PR on your commute after work and thinking “Green Tea would be so delicious right now” but settling for tap water because boiling hot water, steeping your tea, and cooling it over ice just wasn’t on the agenda, you could come home to natural, sun-powered tea at the perfect temperature to pour over ice and enjoy. Here’s what you need:

  1. A large glass container, vase or pitcher
  2. 4-5 cups cold purified or spring water
  3. About 5 tea bags or 5 teaspoons of loose tea depending on how strong you like your tea
  4. Ice and honey or sugar to add for serving

After you have gathered your ingredients, it is very simple. Add the cold water and tea to the glass container and find a nice sunny spot for the tea to soak in the rays for at least 2 uninterrupted hours. If your container is open on top, you may want to cover loosely with a cloth to keep out any unwanted additions, especially if your sunny spot is on the porch. Once the solar power has worked it’s magic, strain your tea over ice and serve.

You can have even more fun by creating your own sun tea concoctions by adding different varieties of tea to play off different flavors. Honest to Blog swears by her favorite, a lavender green tea combination. One of my favorite places to peruse the wide variaties of tea and get inspiration on new combinations is Adagio Teas.

You can create your own blends, made to order, or you can choose from their most popular loose leaf blends such as a decadent chocolate, hazelnut, vanilla or a refreshing vanilla, mango, and fruit medley.

And I’m sure you are aware, but good things bear repeating: tea has all sorts of good stuff in it, including cancer fighting antioxidants, metabolism boosting catechins, and of course, water, of which makes up 60% of our bodies.
